About this journey
Close to the Libyan border, Siwa is an island of palm groves, salt lakes and Amazigh culture in the middle of the Sahara. It is far — about nine hours by road from Cairo — but it feels like another world.
After a long but scenic drive via the Mediterranean coast, you spend a full day exploring the oasis with a local guide and an afternoon safari into the dunes, staying two nights in a comfortable eco-lodge or hotel.
Day by day
- Day 1
Cairo – Siwa
Early departure and drive via the Mediterranean coast and Marsa Matrouh, with a lunch stop. Arrive in Siwa in the evening, check in and have dinner.
- Day 2
Siwa Oasis & Great Sand Sea
Visit the Oracle Temple of Amun, Cleopatra's Spring and the Mountain of the Dead. After lunch, ride a 4x4 into the Great Sand Sea for sandboarding, a hot spring and sunset on the dunes. Dinner at the lodge.
- Day 3
Salt lakes – Cairo
Morning swim in the salt lakes and a walk through Shali Fortress, then drive back to Cairo, arriving at night.

- We pick you up from your hotel in Cairo or Giza early on day 1.
- Cancellation
- Cancel up to 10 days before your trip and your deposit is refunded in full. Within 10 days the deposit is non-refundable, because your guide, vehicle and tickets are already booked and paid — but you can move your date once for free (up to 48 hours before) and keep your deposit as credit. If we have to cancel, you get a full refund.
- The drive is long (about 9 hours each way with breaks). Ask us about a 4-day version for a more relaxed pace.
- Bring swimwear for the salt lakes and springs, and modest clothes for the town.
